Access is by invitation
Carafolio is not yet open to the public. Accounts are issued by invitation, and an application is not an entitlement to one. Before it opens to everyone, a small number of founding members are invited from the applications we receive. Once those places are filled, an application puts you on the opening list instead, and we will write to you once, when Carafolio opens. We may decline an application, and we do not have to say why.
An invitation is personal to you. Do not pass one on, and do not let somebody else use your account. You must be at least 18 years old.
Keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell us promptly if you think somebody else has them. What happens under your account is treated as yours. Give us an address you actually read — notices about your account go there.
What you keep, and what remains yours
What you write and photograph is yours. Your notes, your photographs, your volumes, and the places you keep remain your property. We claim no ownership of them, and nothing here transfers any.
To run Carafolio we need your permission to handle them, so you grant us a licence to store, copy, resize, transmit, print, and display what you upload — for the purpose of operating the product and producing the things you ask it to produce, and for no other purpose. It lasts as long as you keep the content with us, and it ends when the content is removed.
Where you share something into a circle or a trip, the licence extends far enough to show it to the members of that record, and to compose it into a volume of that record. It does not let us publish your work elsewhere, license it onward, advertise with it, or sell it.
The volume you compose is yours. When you bind, what comes out — the selection, the sequence, the narrative as you have edited it — is yours, published under your byline. Carafolio is the imprint, not the author.
What you may not do
Do not put things into Carafolio that you have no right to put there — somebody else's photographs, somebody else's writing, anything unlawful.
Photographs of other people. Most photographs worth keeping have somebody in them. When you upload one of an identifiable person, you are telling us you have their permission — and that it extends to the photograph being composed into a volume, printed, and held by the members of the circle or trip you shared it with. That is a real undertaking. Ask before you upload, not afterwards.
What your photographs show. Some things cannot be freely reproduced even when the photograph is yours — works of art still in copyright, and buildings and heritage sites in countries that restrict commercial reproduction. A volume you bind for yourself and the people you travelled with is a personal copy, and that is how Carafolio is meant to be used.
Do not use Carafolio to harass anybody, or to hold information about somebody who has asked you to stop. If somebody appears in Carafolio and objects, write to us; they do not need an account, and they do not need your permission to ask. Do not attempt to reach accounts, data, or storage that are not yours, and do not scrape the product.
We may remove content that breaks these terms, and we may suspend or close an account that does. Where it is reasonable to do so first, we will tell you why.
Other people's addresses
Carafolio asks you for other people's email addresses — to send a place, to invite somebody to a circle, to credit somebody who told you about somewhere. When you enter an address, you are telling us that you are entitled to give it to us and that the person would not be surprised to hear from us on your behalf. We will send exactly what you asked us to send, and nothing further.
A circle is a small private group and not a broadcast. What a member shares into a circle can be read, kept, and quoted by the other members. Share accordingly.
Composition, and who the author is
Some of what Carafolio produces is drafted by a language model — the narrative of a volume, the practical pages of a city, the answers in Ask. Your content is not used to train models.
A draft is a draft. It is generated from what you kept, it is yours to edit before anything is bound, and the byline on a volume is the Curator's, not ours and not a machine's. You are the author of what goes out under your name, and it is worth reading before it does.
We do not warrant that a generated draft is accurate. Opening hours, addresses, prices, and travel advice change, and a volume records what was true when it was bound.
Places, maps, and the information behind them
Place records — addresses, coordinates, opening hours, telephone numbers — come in part from Google and other sources, and are subject to those providers' terms, including Google's, whose privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy. We do not warrant that any of it is current or correct, and Carafolio is not travel advice. Check anything that matters before you rely on it.
Binding, and printed volumes
A bound volume is a snapshot. It records the places, notes, and practical pages as they stood at the moment of binding. Editing a place afterwards does not change a volume that has already been bound.
Printing is not yet available. When it is, ordering, pricing, delivery, and returns will be governed by their own terms, which you will see before you order.
One thing about it is settled now, because it is decided at the moment you bind rather than at the moment you order. A volume drawn from a single circle or trip may be ordered by the people who were members of that record when it was bound — leaving afterwards does not take that away, and joining afterwards does not create it. A volume drawn from more than one record may be ordered only by the Curator who bound it, because nobody else was present for all of it. What a Curator adds of their own does not change this: putting your own photographs into a volume of your circle is you choosing to give them to the people in that book.
A volume’s waitlist
A bound volume can carry a waitlist, at a short public address that Carafolio assigns and does not change, where readers leave an email address to hear about that volume — above all, to be told when ordering opens and given the link.
Carafolio, and you as the volume’s author, may write to the people on it about that volume. You can see how many are waiting, open the list of names and addresses, and download it to write with your own email tools; each look and each download is recorded.
You may not pass the list on. Do not give it, sell it, or share it with anybody else, and do not use the addresses for anything but writing about that volume.
Everyone who signs up can take themselves off. Every message Carafolio sends carries a one-tap way off the list, and anything you send must tell the reader how to be removed. Once somebody has left, they are gone from the list you see but not from a copy you downloaded earlier, so download it again before each mailing; you may not write to anybody who has left.
Joining a waitlist does not create an account, and a reader who joins one is not bound by the rest of these terms.
While Carafolio is in beta
There is no charge. No payment is taken today and no card is held. If pricing begins, we will tell account holders before it does, and nothing you have already kept will be held behind a paywall without notice.
Features change, and some are withdrawn. We may add, alter, or remove parts of the product, and we may take it down for maintenance without notice.
Keep your own copies of anything you could not bear to lose. We take backups and we take them seriously, but a beta product is not an archive, and we do not warrant against loss.
What you tell us about Carafolio, we may use. If you send us a suggestion, a correction, a report or any other comment on the product, you give us a free, permanent licence to use it to improve and run Carafolio, without paying you and without naming you. This covers what you say about the product, not what you keep in it: your notes, photographs, places and volumes stay yours, on the terms set out above.
Complimentary access ends on 31 December 2026. Where your account holds Curator access we have not charged for, that access ends on that date unless we have told you otherwise in writing. From 1 January 2027 your account continues on Freemium, and everything in it is kept. Freemium keeps eight places in each circle or trip you founded; where one already holds more, nothing is taken out of it, and only a new addition is refused until it is back within the limit or the account moves to another tier.
One volume, for those who test it. Members of the beta test — the friends and family who chose to take part, and the founding members we invite — receive one printed copy of one volume they bind, once printing opens, without charge. It is one volume per account, it is personal to you and cannot be transferred, it has no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money or credit, and it must be claimed within twelve months of the day printing opens. No other volume is free.
How Carafolio will be paid for. After the beta, keeping places and planning trips in Carafolio will be by subscription, and each printed volume will be charged for separately. Prices are not set. We will tell account holders what they are, and when they begin, before anyone is charged.
What we do not promise
Carafolio is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we exclude implied warranties — that the product will be uninterrupted, error-free, fit for a particular purpose, or that the information in it is accurate.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Some limits do not apply to consumers in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area, and certain other places; where that is so, your statutory rights are unaffected.
Ending it
You may stop using Carafolio at any time, and close your account yourself from Settings. Before you do, you can export a copy of what you kept from the same place.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or — with reasonable notice — if we discontinue the product. Content you shared into a circle or trip remains visible to its other members after you leave or close your account, because it formed part of what they were there for — and so does a volume bound from that circle or trip, including one you bound. Your full name comes off it: a volume keeps your first name and initial where it records who bound it or who was in it. A printed copy already made cannot be recalled. If you want something erased entirely, write to us.
Our marks, and changes
Carafolio, Provenance Folio, and the marks and typography of the product are ours. These terms give you no licence to use them.
If we change these terms we will change the date below. Where a change is material we will tell account holders by email before it takes effect. How we handle information about you is described in the Privacy notice, which forms part of these terms.
